Wow. It’s already the end of August. That means the year’s mostly over too, by my reckoning. Woo for Labor Day weekend and having Monday off. My birthday is also this Sunday. I remember the last time my birthday and Labor Day coincided, I was like . . . 8 or something, and I thought that everyone was taking Monday off because it had been my birthday the day before. I thought that holiday was for me.
So we’re not going to Afest this year, primarily due to money. I had thought about going up for a day, Saturday or Sunday, just to check out the cosplay and say hi to everybody and harass my brother and steal my DVDs and games back, plus maybe some fabric shopping. But I shouldn’t be spending money on frivolous things right now so we’ll just be staying in Austin this weekend. Star seems dead-set on making this an awesome birthday weekend. I hope she doesn’t spend too much money or effort because then I’d feel guilty and also obligated to make sure her birthday two weeks from now is even better than mine. I think she’ll like what I got her. ;)
P.S. And speaking of parties, I just finally got around to posting the pics I took at CC's birthday dinner last week. Hopefully someone got pics of when everyone went out afterwards???

At CC’s birthday party last week I was glad to hear that other ACDFers were interested in driving to AX rather than everyone flying on their own. That’s what I wanted to do this year, but everyone’s different schedules prevented that from happening. So I thought it would be good to bring up the subject before anyone buys plane tickets or anything like that. Based off the rates I was quoted this year, a trip to AX in a 8-passenger rental van with a trailer would cost less than $200 per person, compared to about $400 per person to fly. I’m really keen on the idea of a group roadrip to AX so I’m planning on applying my credit card reward points to the van rental to lower the cost and thus sweeten the pot and get more people to come along. And I’m keeping an AX-fund coin jar too (hey, they worked when I took my anime club to AX, so don’t diss ‘em).
I only started thinking about AX 09 because I was trying to figure out how I’d be spending my vacation days next year. I really want to go back to AX but I don’t want to spend 7 vacation days on it again. One big benefit about traveling together is that we can drive non-stop, which saves money that we might spend on a hotel along the way and we shorten the trip by a couple days, which reduces the van rental and how much time we have to take off work. That’s why I think it would be best if we left Austin on Tuesday 6/31 and returned the following Tuesday (7/7). That way we could lock in the weekly rate for the van rental while only spending 5 vacation days in the process.
I know the people at the party are pretty reliable and will go to AX if they say they will. So that gives me a partial headcount (namely me, Star, JennyBunny, CC, and Cat-chan). I understand Amelie’s experience as a civilian at AX was a bit dull, so I’m not sure if she’ll want to go again. That puts us at least 5/8ths of the way towards a full van. (Of course this plan can be expanded to a 12 or 15 passenger van, but for now I thought I’d plan modestly.)
So I’m curious; are there are any other central Texans who would be interested in joining our cross-country cosplay crusade to AX?
