Sometimes I hate money

The office administrator called me into her office today for an ass-chewing, because I’ve failed to pay my company back for that $6000 overpayment they made back in October. It was humiliating to admit that I couldn’t pay the money back, and mortifying to be called a thief for spending money that didn’t belong to me. What made it worse is that I’ve been trying to pay this money back for weeks now, but my money situation is such a mess that I haven’t been able to afford to. This overpayment has been an albatross around my neck. It would be one thing if I owed a credit card this money; that’s what they’re for after all. But owing my employer $6000 is not acceptable at all.
This month’s unplanned expense was an extra $1000 in rent and fees for the new apartment. Recently I’d been putting any expenses I could onto my credit card to make room for these cash-upfront apartment expenses, but that wasn’t quite enough. As a last resort I borrowed just enough money from Liz to allow me to cover the 2 rents, and pay back the money to my company. I feel horrible borrowing money, especially from her. Despite that, there was another $250 due for a pet deposit. Goddammit. Back in the red.
I asked the administrator if I could pay the money back with a check post-dated for next week’s payday, when I’ll finally have enough in the bank. She flat-out said NO and read me the riot act, saying that the company would "take action" against me if I didn’t return the funds by the end of the week.
So I’m in a tight spot right now. Checks are about to start bouncing. If it’s a rent check, then I lose my lease. If it’s my company payback, then they start talking about punitive pay cuts and/or loss of vacation time. Either one is very not good.

I think it’ll be February before I can start my Christmas shopping.
