Halfway between the ice cream and beer

The highlight of this weekend was most definitely Cat & Kevin's wedding. The event was held waaay out in Jonestown, which is Hill Country. We were on time, until I got lost (why are there two streets with the same name?). Liz's motion sickness started to act up as I went up and down and over and around all those hills. It didn't help that the road got progressively worse the further we went, ending up as bare rock at the end. In hindsight we should've just followed that cake delivery truck that we saw on the way; he knew where he was going.
We got there a few minutes late but still with plenty of time to spare. The Villa was nice. Extravagant in an amateur sort of way, if that makes any sense. It kinda reminded me of Dunvegan Keep.
The ceremony was nice and short. To my surprise, Kevin didn't look like a dork in a kilt. Apparently they _can_ be formal after all. And even though I'm a guy and thus, couldn't care less about fashion, Cat's dress looked pretty awesome. All that beading was nice. And the fabric had a nice sheen and looked like it had a good heft to it. I wanted to touch it but I had to remind myself that this wasn't cosplay I was looking at. "Look with your eyes, not with your hands." The ceremony got me feeling all warm and mushy and grinning like an idiot too. But I didn't cry. Nope.
The reception was a typical reception. Food, chit-chat with strangers, stuff. The companion cube cake was the sole nerdy touch at the wedding. While talking with the other people at our table and finding out their connection to the couple, I pointed out to them that at least half the people there were either cosplayers or into the whole video game/anime/comics/etc hobby. It was like an unexpected reunion. I hadn't expected to see so many old faces. I'd assumed, "Okay, it'll Cat and Kevin and their families there and maybe a few people I know. It's gonna be lame." But there were lots more. A lot of people I hadn't expected to see again. And coupled with my previously mentioned warm, mushy feeling, I was all huggy and happy to see them.
It did amuse me how I still identified the people I knew as the "kids" portion of the wedding gathering and anyone older as an "adult". Even though we were drinking and carrying on (and some of us getting married and all), I still think of my group as "kids". I think that impression was reinforced when the gelatto arrived. There we were, standing halfway between the alcohol bar and the ice cream stand, eating ice cream in our formal wear. I think that describes us well.
The rest of the reception ceremonies were standard. Cake-cutting, dad-bride dance, bouquet toss, garter toss (which was too short in my opinion), and first dance. Things started to get fun after all that procedure was out of the way. By now all the families and adults had left and we'd all had a few mimosas so it was time to dance, whether there was an ounce of rhythm amongst us or not. Liz did have a shining moment, rocking out to Thriller. (I thought it was too soon and sat out the song in protest ;)
It was really good to see everybody and I wanted to enjoy the happy, celebratory atmosphere, but I had to be in Dallas the next morning so Liz and I had to leave just as the fun was starting.
