Planning: 40% complete
Dec. 5th, 2010 07:02 pmI've got the Tokyo phase of my trip more-or-less hammered out. Now I'm looking at what I'll be doing on my "break" day(s), when I get out of the city to rest and seek out some natural and traditional sights. I'm thinking of somewhere like Hakone, it's on Lake Ashi close to Mt. Fuji. Far enough away from Tokyo, but not so far that I'm spending a lot on rail fare.
I think if there's one item I'm going to indulge myself with on this trip, it'll be the ryokan onsen. And so far I'm finding that the more you pay, the more "traditional" the ryokan is. Any place that's economical looks just like the hotels we've got here. Pfft. I'm not flying halfway around the world to stay at a Motel 6.
But man, these ryokans are BEAUTIFUL! (This one is about as nice as I'm willing to pay for, going by myself.) It seems a damned shame to go to such a nice place without a special someone, but I guess that just means I'll have to enjoy it twice as much. Or maybe I'll meet someone before then. As if! Ha ha ha. You ain't that lucky, cowboy.
I haven't decided whether I'll return to Tokyo or push on to Kyoto after my quiet time in Hakone. I dunno. I've got more research to do.
