Not to sound like a broken record or anything, but: Acen was fun. Much more fun than I expected. Heh heh heh.
Seriously though, it did rock. I had my doubts going into it. I kinda booked the trip without really thinking. If I had known it came just one week after Shiokaze-con, I probably wouldn't have gone. These two cons have really put the squeeze on my bank account and strain on my costumes.
I started the trip on the right foot. I got there a day early and had nowhere to stay. Don't ask me how it happened. I was there early Thursday morning, waiting around the hotel lobby, watching the first few con attendees wander around, waiting for check-in time. About 2 pm, I call M, my hostess as it were and casually ask what time she and her group are showing up. She tells me, "Oh, we're not checking in till tomorrow. Are you there now?" Yeah, I felt real stupid at that moment. I managed to get a room at a Motel 6 for the night, but this little screw-up had me feeling kinda worthless, especially after the week I had at work. So I spent the night alone in a cheap motel, feeling sorry for myself.
Things turned around Friday. Once I was surrounded by others of my species, I started having fun. Since I had only one costume, it wasn't like Shiokaze where I was always watching the clock, trying to figure out when to start changing for this and that event. At Acen I just cruised the crowds and took lots of pictures. There was a bigger and better cosplay turn-out than I expected. Before I got there, my prediction had been, "Ah, it's just gonna be a bunch of beefy, corn-fed Nordic-looking yankees." But no, there were some A++ cosplays there.
By evening time, M called me up and let it be known that she wanted to do her Sechs cosplay. Which meant it was time for me to do my Sechs cosplay too. Since we were wearing the same costume, we had been planning to take pictures together. But just like at Otakon, she got into costume before I did and left the room. I didn't mind; we only had one prop between us and the lead time would give her a chance to take pics with my prop, while giving me time to put the final touches on my costume. I left the room about 15 minutes after her and went to the prescribed meeting place, but couldn't find her. I looked around for maybe 1/2 an hour, then went back to the room. She was there, already out of costume. Something had broken on her costume. Ah well. I took my prop and returned to ground level. She joined me not long after, but before she could get any pictures of me, the prop broke. Somehow I wasn't surprised.
I kinda avoided the room for most of the con. M was there with C, so I didn't wanna interrupt that couple's dynamic. C seemed like a swell guy. I didn't really get the "couple" vibe from the two of them, but what the hell do I know about relationships? There was a third roommate there, but I saw him all of five minutes the entire con, so I flew solo most of the weekend.
Saturday's masquerade was awesome. I don't know if Illinois makes theater a mandatory class for it's students, but every one of those skits were great. And Acen didn't have any prohibition on play-fighting/stage combat, so that took it to a whole other level. I mean, how many masquerade skits get standing ovations? I'd never seen such a thing before Acen. It was a damned fine masquerade.
Not much happened Sunday. There was a cosplay.com photo gathering, so I slapped on my battered costume and went to the shoot. After that I had to hustle back to the room to change and get packed up. I didn't say bye to M & C, but it wasn't on purpose. Okay, maybe it was, a little bit.

Can you find me?
