Otakon '06

Otakon was a mixed bag. Overall I'd give it a B. Nothing really bad, but for the expense and size of the con, I expected more. It probably didn't help that I started the con off on the wrong foot.
Due to my work schedule, I ended up having to pull an all-nighter just to get everything packed, then drove four hours to the airport. Arrived at the airport a mere 30 minutes before my flight left, which meant I was late and had to wait 2 hours for the next one. I got to Baltimore a few hours before my hostess arrived, so my plan was to go to the nearest Home Depot (5 miles away) and buy some cosplay supplies; stuff that I hadn't been able to bring on the plane, like spray paint and solvent glue. By the way, on cosplay.com, people had been warning out-of-towners about the terrible heat they could expect, but I ignored their warnings. "After all," I thought, "what do yankees know about heat?" But that heat and humidity kicked my butt. I hadn't slept, eaten, or had anything to drink that day and after about two miles I gave up. By the time I got back to the hotel, my roommates were there.
I don't know how, but somehow I hit the roommate jackpot. Someone on cosplay.com advertised room space and I grabbed it ASAP, even though I didn't know them or their friends. I just needed a room fast. There were going to be ten roommates, which kinda concerned me, but like I said, I was desperate. Turns out they were all lively college kids, which made me feel old and dull by comparison. But OMG, the girls. Oh man, those girls. Each one was attractive in her own right and all of them wore . . . flattering costumes. But then some of them started walking around in underwear or just towels, *phew* I'm overheating just from recalling the images. And at the risk of sounding vulgar, some of their cosplay pics are in my private collection, if you know what I mean. The virtuous part of my brain kept saying, "Don't stare, don't drool, and don't say what you're thinking!" The male part of my brain kept panting, "Me want sex that one. And that one too. Sex them all!" Sweet torture aside, all my roomies were all top-shelf cosplayers. I'm second shelf at best, but it was a novel delight to be rooming with so many die-hard cosplayers. Except for in the mornings when all ten of us were changing into costume at once. Then it got a bit irritating.
I made a special version of Pyramid Head that could go to Otakon and there were Silent Hill gatherings, so he was my main cosplay this weekend. I wore him all three days, in hopes of meeting the other SH cosplayers and going to the gatherings. But somehow, I managed to miss almost everyone I was looking for and the photoshoots fell through. That kinda soured things. And now that I'm finding pics of my costume, it looks like it's actually un-improved. That's the problem with wearing costumes that make you blind; you can never check yourself out in the mirror, you have to wait for people to take your picture before you know what you look like. *sigh*
And my Sechs, ugh. There were supposed to be a large (relatively) amount of Gunnm cosplayers and they were going te be cosplaying Saturday, which was my busiest day. But I'd make room for them. I got up earlier than my roommates to get into costume, but was still the last one to leave, three hours later. And then when I got to the BCC, I set my Titan against the wall to straighten my armor, which had shifted during the walk. And *CRASH!* my Titan falls to the floor and breaks. I. Was. Not. Happy. That ruined my Saturday morning. I couldn't find any of the Gunnm cosplayers, but I stayed in costume as long as I could, using the surviving half of the Titan for the few photos asked of me. So far, the photos I've gotten back seem to show my sour attitude at the time. Heh. And here I thought my cosplaying at Otakon this time around would be alot more successful.
But it wasn't all bad. I met tons of cosplay.com people. Even though most didn't know me, I knew them. Seeing them in person delighted me to no end. And the masquerade was wicked awesome. I'm still surprised that people can be so talented, able to make fine costumes AND act or have some other entertaining talent. I didn't buy anything, mostly because I had NO room in my luggage, except for an Otakon shirt. I didn't want to return completely empty-handed.
Well, I think that's enough for now. I've been working on this Otakon backlog for two days now. Maybe more later. For now though, here's some pics of my sugoi roomies.
