I understand you want to keep from spoiling Liz' birthday, but when you do break the news to her, she's likely to ask when you decided to call it off. Can you be okay with saying "2 weeks ago" when she does? I know it seems harsh...my exboyfriend dumped me 1 week after my 23rd birthday, 2 weeks after I'd given him my virginity (something I will never get back), and I wanted to fucking kill him. I found out later that he'd been planning on dumping me for weeks, but "felt bad" because of my birthday coming up. I felt extremely used and disrespected. It's likely 95% of why I choose to stay single now a days.
Do her a favor and don't put it off. At least, in my crazy little universe, doing so shows a little bit of respect.
