The last piece!

The first manga that I ever read and the only manga I still read to this day, is Battle Angel Alita. Other animes and mangas have come and gone, but this is the one to which I remain a die-hard fan. I started reading it over a decade ago, back in 1995. BAA is what got me started in manga, anime, fan-fic, fan-art, and cosplay. It is my Alpha and Omega, hands down.
Today I finally got BAA: Last Order volume #8. Oh my god. Finally Alita has her memory back. Finally we know what destroyed the world. All the pieces are in place. I've been craving these answers for over a decade! And Mr. Kishiro did not disappoint! Oh man, he hit a home-run. These past few ZOTT volumes have had me losing faith. Sure, I like Sechs and the Twins, but the story seemed to be just a whole bunch of meaningless battles. All the suffering and choices and consequences of the original Gunnm seemed absent from LO; all the characters are super-powered and are just going around kicking ass. That's not what I read Gunnm for. Oh, but now it seems we're getting back to Gunnm's roots; Vilma actually reminded me of Alita, having such monumental decisions to make, choices that would shape the world. The tragedy and defeat . . . that's Gunnm. As strong as they are, both Gally and Vilma, they are still weak humans forced to bear the unbearable. Ah, this volume was rife with beautiful tragedies.
There's a lot more that pleased me about this volume, but I'm all sorts of mixed-up about it right now. And there aren't any Gunnm fans on LJ anyways, so I'll stop here. But not before posting a choice scene from the volume. I don't have a scanner, but this'll have to do. *winks in Neb's direction*
This does not end well for the boy . . .

Date: 2006-12-17 06:28 pm (UTC)You could get AV from barnesandnoble.com or amazon, any place like that. I don't know what physical stores carry it in stock; I've never looked for it since I've already got it.
Sounds like something for your Christmas list!
