So Friday I'll be swinging down to Austin for the day to take care of and pick up a few things. Then Saturday Liz is heading to Houston for some family-oriented stuff. I'll be heading back up here to Dallas to hang out at AnimeFest, since I didn't have much else planned anyways. Mostly I'll be there just to take pictures and socialize, though I will bring Wybie because I'm still a little steamed that I only got ONE picture out of wearing him at AX. Hopefully I get to see all the people I haven't seen since who-knows-when. It'll be fun to hang out once again.
So who am I gonna see there? Huh?!?

I’ll keep this report short and sweet, since I’ve already forgotten most of what happened.
Star and I left Austin Thursday evening, as soon as she got off from work. We stopped at Schlotsky’s for dinner, where I yelled at her for eating a baby (sandwich). The other customers were alarmed to hear about her cannibalism. We made good time to Dallas and checked into our lavu-lavu hotel room with its phallic pillows. For a little while, I thought that our room was just special, but it turns out that most rooms had those toys included.
Friday got off to a slow start. We took our time getting up, then went to get our badges, but the con was still pretty quiet by the time noon rolled around. Not much cosplay to look at either. Normally I only eat about one meal a day while I’m at a con, so it was probably more from boredom than from hunger that we ate lunch at the hotel restaurant. Ooof! It was good, but I still can’t get over those price tags. I did end up spending much more money that weekend on food than I usually do, mostly because I was too lazy to go hiking through downtown to find the cheap fast food places.
We spent some time doing last-minute work on our costumes, then Star got into costume and we trotted it out on the con floor. There were some other “civilian” conventions going on at the same time, that Christian one, the Old Lady one, and some business one. So yeah, there were quite a few odd looks and some well-meaning but totally clueless questions asked of us. “Why is there a cat on your head? Is it a Chinese thing?”
My brother and his fiancé showed up that afternoon and joined us. He brought me my PS2 (but forgot the Venture Bros dvds), so I tolerated his presence. We wandered around for awhile and then went out to dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse. When we ate there during A-kon a couple months ago, there was this . . . rose pimp who swindled me out of some money. I’m pretty sure what he does counts as prostitution. Sexual favors for money? Yeah, that counts. So I was careful to avoid him this time.
Saturday the con finally got into gear. I was tormented, though. Did I wanna run around taking pictures of all the cosplayers, or scramble to put the last touches on my own costume and put it on? So I did both, working on the costume most of the morning while taking a break every hour or so to run down and take a peek at the con floor. Eventually Star changed into her Helena and I put on my Spartan. I had been repeatedly warned to not molest her with my eyes or hands while she was in that yummy yummy bodysuit. Fortunately, I had my hands full with spear and shield and the helmet cut off most of my vision, so my costume managed to keep me out of trouble. Unfortunately, Star’s hotness came at a price. Her sadistic boots made her pay for it. While much more comfortable, my costume had some trouble too. It felt like my arm was swelling under the tight straps and I’d have to cut myself out of it later. My costume got more laughs than actual pictures taken, which I guess was cool, considered it was just a joke costume anyways.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. It was my birthday Saturday. But I was reminded in force when some of the ACDFers sang Happy Birthday to me at full volume in the middle of the dealer’s room as Star watched, looking very satisfied with herself. Uh, thanks? We stopped at CC’s party/ACDF meet-up that afternoon, for a little tea party thing. Tricky was acting out a soap opera with milk cartons, which was . . . interesting. It was good to see the ACDFers. This was the first con where we weren’t all rooming or riding together and it felt like something was missing. Everyone was doing their own thing separately. The rest of the weekend I only saw the ACDFers in passing, so it was good to at least take a few minutes to stop and hang out with them.
Runt and his girl showed up again that night for another free meal. Ha ha. No, they cruised the con and the dealer’s room with us too. We went out to T.G.I.Friday’s for dinner and this time the rose pimp caught us. He attacked my brother first, which gave me just enough time to take off running down the sidewalk. I barely escaped. At dinner, I was glad to see that Star and Runt were getting along. They share some fandoms and they’re both nerds so I guess it was a sure thing. But I’ll need to keep them separated in the future; combining her wit with his knowledge of my past . . . gives them too much firepower against me. They cannot be allowed to join forces!
As we were leaving the restaurant, the rose pimp was camped right outside, but I was quick to push Star away and loudly proclaim, “I am SO happy to be GAY! And SINGLE! I love being GAY!” Ha ha. Let’s see him try to proposition me and my woman now. All it cost me was a little pride and sleeping on the floor that night, but I outsmarted him!
We went to the cosplay contest after Runt dropped us off. I didn’t much like the walk-on part. They had some sort of conveyor belt/model runway thing going on where they had four cosplayers on stage at once, always moving. Which meant that it was impossible to get good pics of any of them. We watched a few of the skits, but by the time the first KH yaoi skit came on, we lost our patience for the show.
Sunday morning started with a few more last-minute costume fixes, then I put on Slade and Star her Sakaki and we headed out. We were an odd pair, but got a good number of photo requests. I forgot to stop by some spots I’d picked out earlier for Slade pics and we tried to take some stoopid pictures of Slade trying to eat a sammich.
Sunday evening we decided to stay in since it was the last con evening. We ordered pizza and watched Superman Returns, which I hadn’t seen yet. Maybe it was the fleece GIR cap that Star had bought and was wearing, but she was very fun and irresistibly cute that evening. I learned a lot that evening. Among other things, she taught me the meaning of “butthurt” and explained how a superhero like Superman can make a baby with a human. (Answer: steel panooch!)
Later on, we got restless and headed out to find something to do. In other words, BOOZE! My instincts told me I had to find those crazy Denton people. Past cons have taught me that these people are always fun to hang out with, but when they told me they’d run out of booze, I felt betrayed. Butthurt, even. But to make it up they invited some Swedish manwhores and we went out to find more alcohol. I was jealous; I kinda wanted to be a manwhore too but I’m just not pretty enough. I don’t know what Schizo was thinking, lending out her clothes to those . . . men. I wonder if she burned them afterwards. Anyways, we descended on the well-stocked bar of some people we didn’t even know and pinched some drinks. We paid the kitty, so it was cool. The DCC people had one hell of a headstart on me, so there was no way I could catch up. I just had a couple drinks and tagged along for the fun. One other thing I learned; it’s hard to photograph drunk people. They should make a special camera setting for that, seriously.
Monday was your typical end-of-con day. We checked out of the hotel with about two minutes to spare. The weather was cloudy and I/we were a bit bummed about the week ahead of us. But the bubble of con magic didn’t actually burst until we stopped at a Whataburger in Italy on I-35. There weren’t any strangely dressed cosplayers or j-pop playing in the background or crazed yaoi fangirls running around, just country music playing over the speakers while normal civilians quietly ate their reasonably-priced food. Yup, the con was now behind us.
We stopped at Star’s parents’ house on the way back to Austin. We spent some time trying to describe the weekend to them, but it’s always hard to translate cosplay and other aspects of fandom to civilians. I wanted to show them some pictures on my camera to help explain, but if they saw any of the drunk pictures that would’ve opened up a whole new interrogation.
And when we finally got back to Austin I realized I’d forgotten the PS2 at the hotel. D’oh!

But for now, let me just say that AnimeFest was a BLAST! It was great to spend time with just about everyone I wanted to, and con-wise, everything went smoothly. I hope everyone else had as much fun!

I wasn't trying to look macho . . . )

Item #25 on my AnimeFest To-Do list was: Do laundry. So I threw a couple loads in the wash, plus my Slade costume because he becomes funk-irrific everytime he's worn and needs to be washed after every con. When I came back to load the clothes into the dryer, I open the lid to find a winter wonderland inside the washer! Apparently one of Slade's man boobs exploded and there was stuffing everywhere, not to mention all the clothes in there had tied themselves into one wicked knot. I dunno, I think a gremlin did it or something.
Other than that, I'm still chipping away at this pile of last-minute tasks. I think I'll leave some of the more minor fixes to do at the con; it's a four-day con, I'll be able to find some spare time over the weekend.
Just a couple more hours till I pack up and go! Weee!

Like any other con, AnimeFest had it's ups and downs. The con was Friday thru Monday, since it's Labor Day weekend. I couldn't get there till Saturday morning on account of work. I arrived about 10 am and called my hostess. No answer. I kept trying throughout the day, but I could never get her. So that meant I had nowhere to stay. This was not a good way to start the con. I decided to go register while I was waiting for the call that never came. And guess who I ran to in line. Baby Lain! Ha ha, she got into line right behind me. She was in costume, which got me all fired up. We shot the shit for fifteen minutes or so. It was cool, even her husband was a Gunnm fan. I remembered the lesson I learned from Otakon; I got her cellphone number so we could meet up later. Since I didn't have a room or anywhere else to change, I carried my stuff back out to the parking lot and changed there. That was difficult/awkward/hot. It kind of handicapped my costume, but . . . I guess it looked alright, considering.
It turns out I was the only PH there. Which made me the cock of the walk. The gathering was very small; small enough that I thought, "Sheesh, is this what I went to all the trouble of making a new Pyramid Head for?" There was me, a doctor from SH 1, a nurse, and movie Dahlia. The cosplayers were great, fun people, don't get me wrong. It's just that after Otakon and A-kon, a four-person gathering seemed minimal. It was fun hanging out with them. But the gathering kept getting pushed back and linked up with other gatherings. I had planned to be out of PH by 3-ish so that I could get into Sechs to cosplay with Baby Lain. But the gathering didn't dissolve until 5. That's when I got the call from BL saying that she has to return her borrowed wig, meaning she'll be out of costume by 6. Considering that at Otakon it took me 3 hours to get into costume, this was bad news. My main reason for going to AnimeFest was to cosplay alongside her Gunnm cosplay, but now it looked like that wasn't going to happen. I was bummed. Sechs isn't the kind of costume you can put on in a parking lot. Plus, I didn't have a place to stay for the night. This had me thinking maybe I should just go home. Cut my losses and retreat.
But I decided to try. I called BL back and told her what I could do; she called her wig lady back and it turned out she'd be staying till 10 pm, so that gave us an extension on the wig (no pun intended). So I grabbed my crate-o'-cosplay and hurried to the con. I found a bathroom that was closed for construction to change in. The whole time I was worried I'd get locked in or discovered and evicted by some hotel staff. Then Baby Lain calls me again, letting me know that she didn't mind waiting all night, but her friends were getting restless. So I worked even faster and managed to get the costume on in an hour. The costume was still pretty beat-up from Otakon, but most importantly, I was very happy with how the new mask looked. It was much better than the previous versions. I left my crate and backpack in the bathroom and hurried to find BL.
*smile* Although she was only able to stick around for ten minutes, those ten minutes made the whole trip worthwhile. At first I was trying to think of legitimate poses and trying to hide the bad bits of my costume, but then we started having fun with it and that was great. It was hard trying to stay in character and not smile, since I was so delighted. Then she left with her party and I roamed the con for an hour or two. No one recognized my cosplay, of course, but alot took pictures. Alot of normal people were taking my pic too, which was flattering.

I stayed at my brother's place that night, some 30 miles down the road. It turned out he would be free on Sunday, which meant GIR could go to the con. I decided to let him wear it, since I was very sore from Pyramid Head and Sechs.
Things turned out pretty good for his cosplay. We didn't get to the con till 2 pm, but I was taking it easy that day, so I didn't mind. (Normally I'd be chomping at the bit.) The weather was unseasonably cool and overcast, which is the best weather you can ask for when wearing a mascot. The late start that morning had allowed me time to do some last-minute repairs to GIR, so we were able to get him into costume in short order.
It was delightful to be on the outside of the costume and finally see people's reactions to it. I was a proud parent. Maybe a little overly protective, always straightening the costume and checking on my brother's comfort, etc. Me and his girlfriend had little GIR armbands to identify that we were with him, and people started calling us the GIR crew. My brother really got into the act, engaging the people alot more than I would/could, taking bigger chances with the costume than I would dare (since I know how fragile it is). One downside was that all the girls hugging the costume started leaving little make-up stains. I was happy that they liked it so much, but I kept thinking, "How the hell am I gonna get that clean again?" My brother wanted to wear GIR to the rave, at least for a little bit. I didn't like that idea; I thought that was a recipe for disaster. But the masquerade kept dragging on longer and longer so finally he gave up and we called it a night. The masquerade largely sucked, by the way.

Agh. Tonight's the last chance I have to get all this stuff done. I suppose I can "finish" my costumes, but I won't win any points for quality. Eh, whatever. AnimeFest is only about 5000 people big, so it doesn't really matter I guess. It's just that all of my costumes are expected to make an appearance. People wanna see my GIR, and he's kinda scheduled for the masquerade, Pyramid Head's going to a gathering, and my Sechs will be meeting that awesome Gunnm cosplayer. *sigh* I need to start making costumes that aren't so high maintenance.
I was gonna give a guy a ride from Austin to Dallas, but I kinda had to back out of that one since I'm not sure if I'll really be leaving tommorrow night. If I don't get enough done today, it'll be an all-nighter on Friday. I hope not; all-nighters always leave me drained for the rest of the weekend.
Other than that, today at work was really slow. Probably because I had AnimeFest on the brain all day; tommorrow will probably be worse. On a whim, I brought along volumes 4 & 5 of Genshiken. Man, that was some fun manga. It's finally moved beyond the anime and they introduced a new character that I really like. I wish Genshiken lent itself to cosplay, but it simply doesn't. I'd like to show my support for the series by cosplaying, but even Kujibiki Unbalance is a girls-only cosplay. Oh well.

Paintbrush hair is my favorite!

Ah, I've got a long list of repairs to do on my costumes. I pulled GIR from the closet, where he's been for about three months. I was kinda worried he'd be dirty or broken since I just bagged him up in a hurry after Akon. But he's relatively okay. I should be able to make all his repairs today, and with a pinch of luck, make his make-up version accessories.
I'm cannibalizing parts from my first Sechs mask to make a better (4th) version. The face continues to be the weakest aspect of that costume. If it doesn't work this time around, I'll just give the dang costume away to some gal for her to wear. It would look better on a woman. And I finally got the proper glue to repair my Titan blade (damn you, silicone caulk!). I shouldn't have any problems with it anymore. Of course, the only times that it's broken is when it travels by plane. Coincidence? I think not.
Pyramid Head needs the most work. I busted him up pretty badly in my rush to get packed when I was leaving from Otakon. But I've made him four times already, so I've got the pattern down cold. It shouldn't be tough to make another.
My brother's being all apathetic about AnimeFest (of course). I've finally learned not to rely on him when it comes to cons and costumes. Last year's AnimeFest he screwed me over and he stiffed me on this most recent Otakon (not to mention other cons/costumes), so I don't expect anything from him. I offered to dust off Pokey and/or let him wear my GIR, which was originally a commission for him. But his reply was lukewarm, so forget him.
